The widespread adoption of these small devices has prompted questions about their actual effectiveness in combating extreme heat. Interviews with Parisians reveal a common reliance on mini-fans. "I can't leave the house without it," one woman stated, highlighting the perceived necessity of the device. Another commented on their aesthetic appeal, noting, "There are many in pastel pink, and I find them quite beautiful. It's cuter because the others are a bit ugly." To clarify their utility, Gérald Kierzek, an emergency doctor and medical director of Doctissimo, weighed in on the subject. "The small fan that we put on our face, it will stir the air, and it's always the same air, it doesn't lower the temperature," explained Dr. Kierzek. However, he added a crucial nuance: "If you are moving, it can be interesting because stirring the air and renewing the air can decrease the ambient temperature." Dr. Kierzek also offered a practical tip for maximizing the cooling effect: "What works quite well is to put a fan with a humid cloth in front of it. That will allow for a convection of refreshed air." He concluded that combining this with other measures, such as lowering blinds and ensuring good ventilation, can significantly improve comfort during hot spells.
