Donna Adelson is accused of masterminding a "murder for hire" plot against her ex-son-in-law Dan Markel. But what about Donna's husband?
Tallahassee, Florida – The intricate details of the 2014 murder of Florida State University law professor Dan Markel continue to unfold, revealing a web of family animosity and hired violence. Markel, 41, was fatally shot in his driveway on July 18, 2014, an act later determined to be a murder-for-hire plot. The investigation traced the crime back to Markel's contentious divorce from Wendy Adelson, a fellow law professor. Court documents and testimony suggest that the Adelson family, particularly Wendy's mother and brother, Charlie Adelson, harbored intense resentment towards Dan Markel and desired Wendy and her children to relocate to South Florida. Two individuals, Sigfredo Garcia and Louis Rivera, were identified as the hitmen. Rivera, cooperating with authorities under a plea deal, provided crucial testimony detailing the plot and the Adelson family's involvement. He stated that Wendy's mother wanted Dan dead to facilitate her daughter and grandchildren's return to South Florida. Garcia was subsequently sentenced to life in prison for first-degree murder, with an additional 30 years for conspiracy. Rivera received a 19-year sentence as part of his plea deal. Katie Magbanua, who had ties to both the hitmen and Charlie Adelson, was also sentenced to life in prison. On April 21, 2022, Charlie Adelson was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and solicitation of murder, based on findings from an FBI sting operation. His trial is anticipated to commence before October 30th. The case has drawn national attention, highlighting the profound impact of the crime on both the Markel and Adelson families.
