Family Rescues Stranded Octopus, Receives Unexpected 'Thank You' Gesture

Cape Town, South Africa - A family's compassionate act on Kleinbaai Beach has captured widespread attention after they successfully rescued a stranded octopus. On August 21, 2025, a mother and her two daughters, aged three and five, discovered an octopus lying motionless on the sand. Believing it to be dead, they nonetheless began to pour water over the creature. To their surprise, the octopus showed signs of life. The family continued their efforts, gently encouraging the mollusc back into the ocean. As the octopus moved into deeper water, it was observed extending a tentacle to briefly touch the finger of one of its rescuers. This interaction has been widely interpreted as a gesture of gratitude from the intelligent sea creature before it swam away.
