Mason Thames Unpacks Finney's Traumatic Return in "The Black Phone 2"
Actor Mason Thames recently spoke on the red carpet for the highly anticipated sequel, "The Black Phone 2," offering insights into his reprisal of the character Finney. Thames, now 18, reflected on his journey since the first film, which he starred in at 14. "It's so crazy," Thames stated, "This is where we did the first premiere when I was just turned 14, and now being back here is... I'm 18." He discussed the complexity of Finney's character in the sequel, noting a significant shift. "Finney in this movie, he's a lot different from the first movie. He has a lot of PTSD," Thames explained. "His way of dealing with it is trying not to, and because of it, he has a lot of built-up anger." Thames also revealed the challenge of transitioning from his role in "How to Train Your Dragon" immediately before "The Black Phone 2," which affected his speech. "I was talking a lot faster. I was still kind of doing the Hiccup voice because I was doing that for nine months straight," he shared, adding that the director would sometimes remind him, "I hear Hiccup!" He emphasized the importance of research into trauma for his role and his deliberate choice not to rewatch the first film to align with Finney's desire to forget.
