Dermatologist Debunks Yuka App's Cosmetic Safety Ratings: What You Need to Know

A recent video featuring dermatologist Dra. Leire Barrutia has shed light on the limitations of the popular Yuka app when it comes to evaluating cosmetic products. According to Dr. Barrutia, while the app aims to inform consumers, it falls short in several key areas, potentially leading to misinformation. Dr. Barrutia highlighted three main concerns. Firstly, the Yuka app does not consider the concentration of ingredients in a product. She explained that an ingredient's safety and efficacy are highly dependent on its concentration, drawing an analogy to water consumption: a moderate amount is beneficial, but excessive amounts can be harmful. This crucial aspect of formulation is overlooked by the app. Secondly, the dermatologist pointed out that Yuka's sources for ingredient evaluation are often not based on high-quality scientific evidence. She noted that the app frequently references opinion articles or even links to Wikipedia, rather than peer-reviewed scientific literature, which undermines the credibility of its risk assessments. Finally, Dr. Barrutia stated that the app sometimes incorrectly labels common, safe cosmetic ingredients as high-risk allergens. She reassured viewers that all cosmetic ingredients approved for use in the European Union are thoroughly vetted and considered safe. Furthermore, she clarified that cosmetics are designed to act on the epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin, and do not typically have significant systemic effects on the body. Dr. Barrutia advised consumers to prioritize learning about cosmetic science and understanding the active ingredients that best suit their skin type and concerns, rather than relying solely on apps like Yuka for product safety evaluations. Her insights encourage a more informed and scientifically grounded approach to skincare.
