Asturian Mountain Cows: Self-Sufficient Guardians of the Landscape
In Asturias, the "La Montaña Mágica Alojamiento Rural" is showcasing its unique approach to sustainable land management through the use of native Asturian cattle. Owners, including the individual featured in the video, explain their reliance on the Asturian mountain cow breed, noting its remarkable adaptability to rugged terrain and self-sufficiency in breeding. "They raise themselves, they give birth themselves, they calve themselves," stated one of the owners, highlighting the breed's independent nature. The farm currently maintains nine of these cows, including two calves born just a few weeks ago. The animals, along with horses, are primarily kept outdoors throughout the year. During winter, they have access to a stable where they are provided with hay and "tacos" (a type of pressed feed). This mixed approach allows the animals to graze freely while ensuring their welfare during harsher conditions. "They prefer to be outside much more," an owner commented regarding the cows' preference. However, sheep on the farm are religiously kept indoors due to the presence of predators in the area. This practice ensures the safety of the more vulnerable livestock. The use of these native breeds not only supports local biodiversity but also aids in naturally clearing the land, contributing to the overall ecological balance of the rural property.
