Ukrainian Blogger Ignites Debate: Are Teachers Failing to Educate in Modern Schools?
A local Ukrainian blogger, known as "Дімон Село," has sparked a lively debate online with a recent video criticizing the current state of education and the role of modern teachers. In his passionate address, the blogger, who identifies as a parent, argues for increased teacher salaries but questions the effectiveness and dedication of many educators. "I am for raising salaries for everyone who works, because people deserve it," he stated. However, he quickly added, "Unfortunately, I cannot say anything good about modern teachers because among those who hold these positions and work with children, there are very few true pedagogues." The core of his critique centers on the practice of teachers offering private tutoring to students from their own classes. "How can a teacher, where they teach, also be a tutor?" he asked, implying a conflict of interest. He suggested that this leads to a system where "children who do not pay are automatically bad." He further elaborated on his belief that teachers have shifted their focus from teaching to merely "controlling, demanding, and checking." He passionately asserted, "The very word 'teacher' means one who teaches, not one who checks." He concluded by suggesting that if teachers are not fulfilling their primary role of educating, they should not expect salary increases, instead proposing that parents who teach their children at home should be compensated.
