The Enduring Mystery of Carlo Acutis: Faith, Science, and the Phenomenon of Incorruptibility

Assisi, Italy – The beatification of Carlo Acutis, a young Italian computer programmer who passed away in 2006, has brought renewed attention to the phenomenon of incorruptibility within religious traditions. Acutis, who died at the age of 15, was beatified in the town of Assisi, Central Italy, with the Vatican making remarks on his life as a model of holiness. The intrigue surrounding Acutis intensified when his body, exhumed for beatification, was presented as remarkably preserved, years after his passing. This has led to widespread discussion regarding the intersection of science and spirituality. While many devout followers view such preservation as a miraculous sign of divine favor and holiness, experts clarify that the appearance of Acutis’s body is due to a silicone reconstruction of his face and hands, and his body was dressed in typical attire for public veneration. Archbishop Domenico Sorrentino of Assisi previously stated that the body had undergone normal decomposition, but all parts were present. Historically, the phenomenon of incorruptibility, where a deceased body does not decompose in the expected manner, has been a source of fascination and reverence across various religions and cultures. Figures like Saint Bernadette Soubirous of Lourdes are often cited, whose body remains remarkably preserved over a century after her death. These cases are often seen by believers as evidence of divine intervention, reflecting the purity and holiness of the individual in life. However, scientific explanations often point to specific environmental conditions or embalming techniques that can slow decomposition. The case of Carlo Acutis continues to prompt reflection on faith, science, and the mysteries that lie between them.
