Managua, Nicaragua – The annual July 19th commemoration in Nicaragua, marking the Sandinista Revolution, unfolded with a blend of traditional pomp and notable peculiarities, as observed by independent media. President Daniel Ortega arrived at the event driving himself, with the car window down, before joining the stage. The four-and-a-half-hour event featured various elements, including a flag display and lively dancing by attendees, some of whom were dressed in uniform. The military conducted a 21-cannon salute, reportedly using gunpowder, which was interpreted by some as a symbol of loyalty to the leadership.President Ortega's speech, lasting several hours, delved into historical anecdotes, touching upon colonialism, ancient empires, and the ineffectiveness of the United Nations. Notably, he referenced Mao Zedong and the Red Army as inspirations for the Sandinista Revolution, an anecdote reportedly not shared in previous years when Taiwanese officials were present.Towards the conclusion of his address, President Ortega emphasized the importance of "revolutionary vigilance," urging militants to remain active in their communities. This statement, coupled with recent reports of "disappeared militants," has raised concerns among observers regarding the political climate in Nicaragua.
