Firstly, Dr. Bing warns against consuming canned foods with damaged packaging, such as bulging, cracked, or severely dented cans. He states, "That's a red flag for botulinum contamination." This bacterium produces botulinum toxin, a potent neurotoxin that can block muscle movement, leading to flaccid paralysis, blurred vision, and respiratory failure, which can be deadly without antitoxin. He emphasized that the toxin is "odourless and tasteless," making it undetectable without visual cues of can damage. Secondly, the neurologist advises limiting or avoiding certain large tropical reef fish, including barracuda, grouper, and amberjack, especially in tropical regions. These fish can accumulate ciguatoxin from dinoflagellates in coral reefs. Symptoms of ciguatera poisoning can include unusual temperature sensations (cold feeling, burning hot), tingling, dizziness, and chronic neuropathies. Dr. Bing highlighted a critical point: "Ciguatoxin is heat-stable, so no matter how well you cook the fish, it won't destroy the toxin." He recommends avoiding specific parts like the liver or roe and being aware of endemic areas. Lastly, Dr. Bing strongly cautions against eating undercooked pork, particularly from unregulated sources. This practice carries the risk of neurocysticercosis, caused by ingesting Taenia solium eggs, a tapeworm that can send larvae to the brain. He noted, "It's actually one of the leading causes of acquired epilepsy worldwide." This risk is not confined to developing countries but can also be found in developed nations with poor sanitation.
