BERLIN – A recent online video featuring dermatologist Dr. Emi highlights key considerations for choosing effective sunscreen, emphasizing the importance of comprehensive UV protection. Dr. Emi explained that while UVB rays are commonly known for causing sunburn, UVA rays are primarily responsible for skin aging, and both contribute to the risk of skin cancer. The dermatologist advised consumers to look for sunscreens with a high UVA protection factor, often indicated by symbols like "PA++++" or a circled "UVA" logo. She also cautioned individuals with sensitive eyes to check sunscreen labels for high concentrations of alcohols such as ethanol, isopropanol, or denatured alcohol, as these can cause irritation. Addressing the ongoing debate about UV filters, Dr. Emi discussed both chemical and mineral filters. She expressed a personal preference for newer chemical filters like Tinosorb, Mexoryl, and Uvinul, while noting her decision to avoid Octocrylene due to a lack of conclusive studies on its potential hormonal effects and environmental impact. Regarding Titanium Dioxide, a common mineral filter, Dr. Emi stated that despite recent concerns, the amounts typically found in sunscreens are generally considered safe, and she continues to use products containing it.
