En las últimas décadas se viene produciendo un adelanto en la pubertad de las niñas que puede implicar problemas de salud en etapas posteriores
A pediatric endocrinologist recently addressed a frequently asked question regarding the onset of menstruation in young girls. The specialist clarified that while individual growth patterns vary, menstruation occurring before the age of 10 is medically categorized as precocious puberty and is considered an illness. The doctor explained that medical criteria for normal pubertal development have evolved over time. "In my time, it was considered internationally normal to menstruate from 12 years old," she stated. "However, these criteria have been modified, and currently, for several years now, it is considered normal for a girl to menstruate from 10 years old." She detailed several potential causes for such early onset, including "a cerebral tumor, that is, a tumor at the pituitary level," "a tumor at the ovarian level," or "congenital adrenal hyperplasia." Additionally, she mentioned "idiopathic" causes, often linked to genetic mutations in specific areas like kisspeptins or makorins. The doctor emphasized that while factors like genetics, diet, sleep, and physical activity all contribute to a child's overall growth, early menstruation itself is a medical condition requiring attention.
