A couple has embraced a unique lifestyle, calling a Holland America Line cruise ship, the Zaandam, their home for six months out of the year. Christine, an American, and her Dutch husband, Pete, the ship's Staff Chief Engineer of 32 years, share insights into their daily life at sea. Christine, formerly a Cruise Director, transitioned into a marketing business following the pandemic, now working remotely or from various ports. She highlights the distinct advantages of living on a cruise ship, including complimentary food, laundry services, and room cleaning. "It's almost like living on a big private yacht," Christine stated, emphasizing the convenience and luxury of their mobile home. During the summer months, the couple's voyages primarily take them through the Alaskan waters, offering stunning scenic views. In winter, their travels extend to diverse international destinations such as Australia, the Amazon Rainforest, Hawaii, and the French Polynesian Islands. When not cruising, they reside in their home in the Netherlands. The Zaandam, a smaller vessel, accommodates approximately 1,400 guests, fostering a more intimate atmosphere for its residents.
