GAZA STRIP – A deepening humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip has led to widespread famine, with hundreds of thousands facing starvation, particularly children. Heart-wrenching images from the region depict severely malnourished individuals, including young children, struggling for survival. One such case is Auday, a young boy whose parents were tragically killed, leaving him dependent on his aunt for care. However, his aunt herself struggles to secure even basic necessities, including food and water, for herself and the child. "She cannot even find food for herself, let alone feed a baby who needs milk and diapers," stated Auday's uncle, Eid Saeed Siyam. According to the World Food Programme, approximately half a million Gazans, representing a quarter of the population, are living in famine conditions. Many Palestinians are enduring days without any food intake. Over a hundred humanitarian organizations have issued warnings about the severe famine gripping Gaza. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), described the situation as "mass starvation" and unequivocally stated that it is "man-made," directly attributing it to the ongoing blockade that has lasted over 80 days. While some aid is now entering, Dr. Ghebreyesus emphasized that it is merely a "trickle" and insufficient to meet the overwhelming needs, with people continuing to starve. Figures from the Israeli Army indicate that an average of 146 trucks carrying humanitarian aid entered Gaza daily during the conflict. However, the United States asserts that 600 trucks are required daily to adequately feed the population. Recently, some of the 700 aid trucks loaded with humanitarian supplies began crossing the border from Egypt into the Gaza Strip. Israel has accused the United Nations of slow aid delivery, while the UN and other humanitarian organizations counter that Israel, which controls all entry and exit points, obstructs aid shipments. Additionally, the Israeli Army has faced criticism for allegedly firing upon and killing Palestinians near or en route to aid collection points. Alexandra Saieh from Save the Children highlighted the impossible choice faced by Gazans: "People in Gaza now have to make a choice between starvation and gunfire." She added that food distribution sites have become "massacre sites," underscoring the extreme dangers faced by those seeking assistance. Saieh also noted the profound impact on aid workers, stating, "Our own colleagues are coming to work hungry, coming to work exhausted." The Gaza Ministry of Health, controlled by Hamas, reported that 40 of the 111 hunger-related deaths since the beginning of the war occurred in the last week alone. The WHO warns that this figure represents only the "tip of the iceberg," suggesting the true toll of the famine is far greater.
