New York City is currently grappling with a dangerous and escalating trend known as "subway surfing," which has led to multiple fatalities this year. The practice involves individuals riding on the exterior of moving subway trains, often for social media content. This past weekend, the city was rocked by the tragic deaths of two teenage girls, Zemfira Mukhtarov, 12, and Ebba Morina, 13, who were found unconscious on the roof of a J train at the Marcy Avenue station in Brooklyn. Authorities suspect the incident was a result of subway surfing. "This year alone, five people have died as a result of similar incidents across the city," stated a local official, highlighting the severity of the problem. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has called upon social media companies to actively remove videos that glamorize this perilous activity. Reports indicate that over 1,800 such videos were taken down in the first half of 2025. The MTA has also launched public service announcements, urging young people to "Ride inside, stay alive," and has partnered with city schools for a comic-book themed campaign to raise awareness about the dangers. In a proactive measure, police are now utilizing drones to spot and intercept subway surfers before they can be harmed, a strategy that has already resulted in over 200 rescues. The challenge remains how to effectively deter this deadly trend and safeguard more lives.
