London Swelters: Residents Struggle with Heatwave and Lack of AC
Londoners Battle Record Heatwave Amidst Lack of Air Conditioning London is currently experiencing an unprecedented heatwave, with temperatures soaring to 27 degrees Celsius (74 degrees Fahrenheit) by 9 AM and forecasted to reach 31 degrees Celsius (88 degrees Fahrenheit) today, and potentially 33 degrees Celsius (92 degrees Fahrenheit) tomorrow. Residents are struggling to cope with the extreme conditions, exacerbated by the city's infrastructure. One London resident, who recently moved to the city, shared her personal struggle in a video, highlighting the unique challenges faced by those in older buildings. "The buildings here were created to keep heat in, because before global warming and climate change, it didn't get this hot in London," she explained. This architectural design, while beneficial in colder months, proves problematic during heatwaves, as most residential flats and many public transport lines, including the majority of the Tube, are not equipped with air conditioning. She described taking "the coldest shower I've ever taken in the history of my life" to find relief. Despite the difficulties, she maintained a resilient spirit, stating, "Despite all odds, I am living and thriving." The heatwave is expected to continue, with similar conditions anticipated in other European cities like Paris, where she plans to travel tomorrow.
