Copenhagen, Denmark – The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has announced a new initiative aimed at supporting the LGBTQ+ community by addressing critical digital rights questions. The announcement, made via a recent video, highlights growing concerns over government legislation and tech company policies that are increasingly restricting LGBTQ+ rights and censoring related content online. According to EFF, governments worldwide are enacting laws that limit the freedoms of LGBTQ+ individuals, while major tech platforms are contributing to this suppression by banning and censoring pro-LGBTQ+ content. This environment, EFF states, forces queer people to resort to Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to access information or to self-censor their online activities to avoid potential prosecution or harassment. "This year, pretty much like all years, LGBTQ Pride Month is taking place at a time when governments around the world are passing legislation restricting LGBTQ rights, and tech companies are facilitating this further by banning and censoring pro-LGBTQ content on their platforms," a representative stated in the video. They emphasized that queer people are under threat both online and offline. To counter these challenges, EFF is launching an "LGBT Q&A" series, inviting the community to submit questions on topics ranging from safe engagement on dating apps like Her and Grindr, to securely posting content from protests without accidentally outing friends, and engaging in online discourse without being doxxed. Questions can be submitted through comments on their social media platforms or via a secure anonymous link on their website, eff.org. EFF reiterated its commitment to building an internet "where only you get to decide what to share and what you'd like to keep private," stressing that content or questions discriminating against marginalized communities, including the LGBTQ+ community, will not be tolerated. The initiative seeks to empower LGBTQ+ individuals with the knowledge and tools to navigate the digital landscape safely and freely.
