Mexico Tackles Plastic Pollution with Nationwide Beach Cleanup
Mexico Launches Nationwide Beach Cleanup Program for World Environment Day Mexico City – In a significant move to address environmental concerns, the Mexican government, through the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), launched a nationwide beach cleanup program on June 5th, 2025. The initiative, announced by SEMARNAT Secretary Alicia Bárcena, coincides with World Environment Day and aims to combat the growing problem of plastic pollution on Mexico's coasts. "Today, this celebration is dedicated to the cleanup, to the elimination of plastics," stated Bárcena in a press conference. The program focuses on 17 coastal states, with a particular emphasis on areas heavily impacted by plastic waste. The video highlights the staggering statistic that Mexico generates 15,000 tons of plastic daily, with 80% ending up in the oceans and on beaches. The initiative involves collaboration with the Mexican Navy and aims not only to clean up existing waste but also to raise public awareness about responsible waste management. The program's success will rely on the participation of citizens and local communities in protecting the nation's coastal environments. The long-term goal is to make these beaches public areas for the benefit of all Mexicans.
