Bolivia's Political Tensions Rise: Electoral Challenges, Prisoner Demands, and Media Scrutiny Dominate News

La Paz, Bolivia – July 15, 2025 – Today's political landscape in Bolivia was marked by significant developments across various fronts. Assembly members expressed concerns over a new legal challenge against the upcoming elections, emphasizing the need to respect the preclusion principle and safeguard the electoral process. A constitutional court in Beni has scheduled a hearing for July 21 regarding this matter. Meanwhile, calls for the release of political prisoners intensified. Branko Marinkovic asserted that Luis Fernando Camacho, Jeanine Áñez, Marco Pumari, and other political detainees are innocent and should be freed. The candidate for senator by Libre stated his party would not engage in a 'dirty war' but would focus on justice. In a separate event, Ruth Nina, a former leader of the now-defunct Bolivian National Action Party, accused certain media outlets of bias, claiming they ignored the deaths of eight community members in Llallagua while focusing solely on police casualties. She questioned the media's integrity, labeling them as 'sold out.' President Luis Arce highlighted the importance of La Paz's energy sector during the honorary session commemorating the 216th anniversary of the city's libertarian feat. He underscored the department's integration into the nation's hydrocarbon map, emphasizing its role in national development. The anniversary celebrations also featured a civic parade, showcasing the patriotism of La Paz residents. Adding to the political tensions, peasant organizations from La Paz are reportedly reconsidering their support for Andrónico Rodríguez, citing dissatisfaction with his continued association with Mariana Prado. Concurrently, Christian Democratic Party militants staged a protest, blindfolded, to denounce the exclusion of presidential candidate Rodrigo Paz from electoral debates, while criticizing Andrónico Rodríguez for repeatedly excusing himself from such events.
