Brussels, Belgium – On June 25, 2025, Romanian politician Nicușor Dan faced a direct and vocal confrontation from citizens in Brussels, where he was questioned about his political actions and promises. The encounter, captured on video, shows a woman pressing Dan on several contentious issues, including the annulment of elections, increases in Value Added Tax (VAT), and his personal salary. The woman, visibly frustrated, challenged Dan on his administration's decisions, stating, "You promised in the electoral campaign... you promised that you would do everything possible to show us the truth." She specifically questioned a reported 50% increase in his salary, contrasting it with the dire financial situation of ordinary citizens. To underscore her point, she presented a pension slip from an individual showing a monthly income of only 496 Romanian Lei (RON), asking, "How do you expect that gentleman to live on 496 RON, and you added a 50% allowance to your 20,000 RON salary?" Dan, appearing to listen, offered brief responses, at one point stating, "In this month, they voted on the government and the deficit." When pressed on the VAT increase despite previous promises not to raise it, he maintained that the VAT remained at 19%, not 20% or 21%. The confrontation highlights growing public discontent regarding economic policies and perceived governmental disconnect from the struggles of ordinary Romanians.
