Spanish Politicians Defy Ban, Join Thousands at Budapest Pride to Champion LGTBI+ Rights
Budapest, Hungary – Spanish politicians Ernest Urtasun, Yolanda Díaz, and Irene Montero joined thousands of individuals in Budapest today to advocate for LGTBI+ rights during the Pride event. Their presence comes despite a warning from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's ultranationalist government, which had prohibited the march and enacted new laws threatening organizers and participants with imprisonment or fines. Speaking from Budapest, Ernest Urtasun stated, "Pride cannot be persecuted, prohibited, or silenced." He emphasized that defending LGTBI+ rights extends to defending the freedoms of all citizens. Urtasun highlighted Spain's commitment as a progressive government to upholding these rights and liberties, positioning Spain as a leader in LGTBI+ rights within Europe. He further added, "We are here today to defend democracy and freedoms in Europe." Urtasun expressed hope that Budapest would become a leading capital for the defense of LGTBI+ rights across Europe and extended gratitude to the Mayor of Budapest for their leadership and efforts in organizing the event. The demonstration underscores ongoing tensions between Hungary's conservative government and European values regarding human rights and freedoms.
