Mexico City-US Border Train Line Construction Begins: A $175 Billion Project to Boost Economy and Connectivity Mexico is embarking on an ambitious railway project, connecting Mexico City to the US border via a high-speed passenger train line. Construction on the 394-kilometer Saltillo-Nuevo Laredo segment began in July 2025, and the entire project is expected to be completed by 2028. This $175 billion initiative is projected to generate between 500,000 and 1 million direct jobs. President Claudia Sheinbaum highlighted the project's job creation potential. The new line will traverse Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, and Tamaulipas, with stations in key cities along the route. Beyond the Saltillo-Nuevo Laredo line, plans include other strategic routes, such as Mexico City-Queretaro-Irapuato. This modernization aims to improve connectivity and reduce travel times between key regions, strengthening the country's railway infrastructure. "This project is a crucial step in modernizing our transportation system and creating economic opportunities," stated President Sheinbaum in a recent press conference.
