Lake Atitlán Ritual Causes Panic, Woman Suffers Breakdown
Images of the devil and death cause panic in Lake Atitlán. A ritual performed on the shores of Lake Atitlán in San Pedro la Laguna, Solola, Guatemala, caused a stir among residents on May 31st. A local woman, known only as Coón, experienced a nervous breakdown after unexpectedly encountering the ritual, which included figures representing the devil and death. According to a COCODE (Community Council for Urban and Rural Development) report, Coón also reported being harassed by the individuals performing the ritual. Two participants later explained that they were guided by a resident from San Juan la Laguna, identified as Nicolás. Community leaders, while respecting religious beliefs, stated that the ritual was inappropriate due to the time, location (a tourist area), and the presence of children and families. The case has been referred to the Council of Elders for further investigation. The incident highlights the cultural complexities of the region and the need for sensitivity regarding religious practices in public spaces.
