Guatemala City, Guatemala - The Congress of the Republic recently initiated discussions on Law 6550, a proposal aimed at extending the deadline for vehicle circulation tax payments by two months. This initiative, read during the fourth extraordinary plenary session on Tuesday, June 17th, seeks to push the current July 31st deadline to the last business day of September 2025. The proposed extension is designed to ease the financial burden on Guatemalan families and prevent vehicle owners from incurring penalties for non-compliance. According to data from the Superintendence of Tax Administration (SAT), as of June 13th, only 37% of the country's vehicle fleet had fulfilled this obligation, leaving a significant 63% still outstanding with less than two months until the original deadline. The SAT reminds taxpayers that payments can be made from January 1st until July 31st. Failure to pay within the stipulated period results in automatic surcharges, including a 100% fine on the tax value, which can be reduced to 25% for voluntary payments, along with annual interest of 12.65% calculated daily via the DeclaraGuate system. The fate of this extension now rests with Congress, whose decision could offer crucial financial relief to thousands of Guatemalan vehicle owners.
