An impactful photograph capturing a lightning strike on the summit of Volcán de Agua, located between the departments of Sacatepéquez and Escuintla in Guatemala, has gained international recognition. The image, taken by Guatemalan photographer Sergio Montúfar in July 2019, was recently highlighted by the U.S. site Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD), a scientific outreach project of NASA, on July 26, 2025. The publication notes the photo's aesthetic and scientific value, explaining the physical phenomenon behind lightning. It also clarifies that the featured image is a composite of two photographs, showing a lightning bolt descending from communication antennas near the volcano's summit. The image has generated significant interest among Guatemalan users and astronomy enthusiasts worldwide. In recent weeks, Volcán de Agua has also been a topic of discussion on social media due to alleged rumbles heard during recent earthquakes in the region. Some individuals have speculated about a supposed reactivation of the dormant volcano. However, volcanologist Amílcar Roca has dismissed these claims. Roca stated that high-magnitude earthquakes cannot reactivate volcanoes that have been dormant for millennia, citing international studies that do not support this theory.
