Guatemala Prison Riots: Gangs Demand Transfers, Government Refuses to Negotiate

Guatemala City, Guatemala – On August 12, two prison riots erupted in Guatemala, as confirmed by Minister of Government Francisco Jiménez. The disturbances, which took place at the preventive prison in Zone 18 and Fraijanes 2, are reportedly orchestrated by gang leaders. These leaders are demanding their transfer from the maximum-security prison Renovación 1 in Escuintla back to their previous detention centers. Minister Jiménez stated that these actions are a desperate attempt by gangs to regain control and influence within the prison system. He emphasized that the Guatemalan government will not succumb to these demands, drawing a clear distinction from past administrations that may have engaged in negotiations with criminal groups. “The state of Guatemala will not be swayed by you,” Jiménez asserted in a public message. The minister further highlighted that these criminal groups, known for extorting the country and committing assassinations, are currently holding penitentiary guards hostage, who bravely resisted their threats. Authorities are maintaining a firm stance, indicating that the government's resolve to combat organized crime within the prison system remains unwavering.
