SAO PAULO, BRAZIL – Father Joao Jose Bezerra, known as Brazil's first black belt priest and a South American Jiu-Jitsu runner-up, has been suspended following an incident during a mass where he allegedly assaulted a 62-year-old woman. The event, which occurred on August 7 at the Church of Our Lady Consolata in Sao Manuel, Sao Paulo, has garnered significant attention. According to reports, Father Bezerra, who was invited by the parish priest to participate in the religious service, intervened when a woman attempted to approach the Holy Sacrament. The situation escalated, leading the priest to reportedly strike the woman and pull her hair with violence. Parishioners quickly intervened to assist the woman, who appeared disoriented after the attack. The ecclesiastical body has confirmed that financial support was provided to the assaulted woman. An internal process has been initiated to investigate the incident and determine appropriate sanctions for the priest, citing "excessive zeal." Father Bezerra has been temporarily removed from his religious activities at his sanctuary in Santa Teresinha, Cerqueira César, pending the outcome of the internal investigation. The priest had previously stated he possessed the necessary studies to perform exorcisms and warned against demonic possession among congregants.
