Madrid, Spain – Nurse Jorge Ángel recently published a video addressing a common concern among expectant parents: the pain associated with epidural administration during childbirth. In his informative explanation, Ángel clarified the procedure, emphasizing that the process is designed to be as comfortable as possible for the patient. According to Ángel, a local anesthetic is always administered prior to the epidural insertion, numbing the area to minimize discomfort. He demonstrated that while a larger needle is initially used as a guide, it is promptly removed once the catheter is in place. The part that remains in the patient's back is a very fine, flexible thread-like catheter, through which anesthetic medication is continuously delivered. Ángel likened the insertion process to that of a peripheral intravenous (IV) line, a routine medical procedure. He urged viewers to disregard circulating misinformation that might cause unnecessary anxiety, assuring them that patients typically do not experience pain during the epidural procedure itself. His message aims to provide factual reassurance and reduce fear surrounding this common pain management option during labor.
