In a recent interview snippet from EUM, psychologist Ramón Nogueras offered key insights on how individuals can determine if their psychologist is effective. Nogueras emphasized that patients have the right, and even the duty, to ask their therapist critical questions. He outlined three crucial areas to inquire about: 1. Theoretical Model: Patients should ask what theoretical approach the psychologist uses. Nogueras advised caution against approaches like 'family constellations' or 'psychoanalysis,' suggesting these might not be evidence-based. 2. Treatment Plan and Duration: A good psychologist should be able to provide an approximate plan of action and an estimated number of sessions. Vague answers like 'we'll see how it goes' or 'this is a lifelong process' are red flags. 3. Homework/Activities Between Sessions: Nogueras stressed the importance of therapists assigning activities or 'homework' for patients to complete outside of sessions. He noted that evidence-based therapies require patients to apply learned strategies in their real-world environment, distinguishing them from less effective methods.
