Historic Saulxures Castle: A Grandeur Lost to Time. Saulxures, France – The once-magnificent Saulxures Castle, a testament to 19th-century industrial wealth, stands today as a haunting relic, slowly being reclaimed by nature. Built between 1854 and 1861 at the behest of Elisabeth Géhin, the widow of a wealthy industrialist, the castle was once hailed as a "small Versailles" during the flourishing era of the Vosges textile industry. Its opulent Louis XV style architecture served as a grand residence for 120 years. However, since 1972, the estate has been abandoned, its last heirs reportedly prioritizing industrial ventures over the upkeep of the non-revenue-generating castle. Despite attempts by the local municipality to save the structure, the owners demanded colossal sums, preventing any rescue efforts. Today, the castle is in a severe state of disrepair. Valuable furnishings, parquet floors, and even ornate grilles have been sold off. The roof and ceilings have collapsed, leaving only the sturdy walls and the iconic four caryatids—gigantic sculptures symbolizing the four seasons—standing as silent witnesses to its past glory. Urban explorer Lendér Norbert, who recently documented the site, noted, "This is a top spot for urbex enthusiasts, even by French standards." The castle serves as a stark reminder of architectural heritage lost to neglect.
