Tokyo, Japan – A recent street interview with Dutch tourists in Japan has shed light on stark differences in work culture, particularly regarding working hours and overtime. Tourists from the Netherlands expressed surprise at the typical Japanese work week, contrasting it with their own country's approach. According to the interviewees, Dutch workers often average around 32 hours per week, a practice influenced by a tax system that makes working 40 hours less financially advantageous. "If you work 32 hours, you pay less taxes. If you work 40 hours, you pay more taxes, so the net income doesn't really change too much," one tourist explained. This system, they noted, encourages a shorter work week. Furthermore, the Dutch tourists highlighted the rarity of overtime in the Netherlands. "Most jobs don't really have overtime," one stated, adding, "It's not really like normal." This allows individuals, especially parents, more time for personal life and childcare. "Especially if they have a kid, for example, then they can have some time for themselves or spend some time with the kid," the tourist elaborated, suggesting it can also lead to savings on daycare costs.
