
West Virginia Flash Floods: Death Toll Rises as Rescue Efforts Continue
Devastating Flash Floods Hit Wheeling, West Virginia, Leaving Multiple Dead and Missing Wheeling, West Virginia, experienced catastrophic flash flooding overnight, resulting in at least three confirmed deaths and several missing persons. The Wheeling-Ohio County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) is leading search and rescue efforts, with teams using drones and cadaver dogs to locate those still unaccounted for. The flooding caused significant infrastructure damage, including damage to roads and bridges. According to Lou Vargo, director of the Wheeling-Ohio County EMA, "We've had major infrastructure damage to roads and bridges. We've had multiple fatalities, and we still have reports of missing persons." The heaviest rainfall, estimated at 2.5 to 4 inches in some areas, fell on the east side of town, particularly in Elm Grove and Woodsdale. An emergency shelter has been set up at a local school. The National Weather Service forecasts an additional 1 to 1.25 inches of rain. Despite the challenges, rescue crews and public works teams are working diligently to clear debris and restore essential services. Their efforts offer hope amidst the tragedy.
