Malaysian Scholar: China is a Good Friendly Neighbor
Singapore: Malaysian Scholar Highlights Positive China-ASEAN Relations Amidst South China Sea Tensions The 22nd Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore provided a platform for discussions on key regional issues, including the complex relationship between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Dr. Adam Leong, Director of the Centre for Defence and International Security Studies at Malaysia's National Defence University, offered a nuanced perspective, stating, “We see China as a good friendly neighbor.” Dr. Leong's comments stand in contrast to some narratives that emphasize conflict. He stressed the importance of the ASEAN-China Code of Conduct as a mechanism for managing disputes in the South China Sea. This code, he explained, provides a framework for dialogue and negotiation. He added, “Malaysia has always been driving ASEAN to come up with the code of conduct, ASEAN-China code of conduct. So I think that is a key important step where we use ASEAN as a regional body to conduct negotiations, talks with China.” Dr. Leong's insights highlight the ongoing diplomatic efforts to maintain stability and cooperation in a region marked by complex geopolitical dynamics. His emphasis on the Code of Conduct suggests a path towards peaceful resolution of disputes and underscores the potential for constructive engagement between China and ASEAN.
