70+ Sharks Spotted Near São Paulo Coast: A Marine Conservation Success Story
A school of over 70 sharks, including numerous hammerheads, was recently sighted in the Alcatrazes archipelago, a marine conservation area located 40 kilometers off the coast of São Sebastião in northern São Paulo, Brazil. The remarkable discovery was made by researchers from the Alcatrazes Sea Project and agents from the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio). "We were conducting a routine survey when we were surprised by this massive school of sharks," said one researcher involved in the expedition. The group included approximately 50 hammerhead sharks and at least 20 other species. Despite their imposing numbers, hammerhead sharks are generally not considered aggressive, posing little threat to humans. This extraordinary encounter highlights the thriving marine ecosystem of Alcatrazes and the importance of continued conservation efforts to protect this unique environment.
