Brazil Faces Surge in Severe Respiratory Illnesses Amid Low Flu Vaccination Rates
A surge in severe acute respiratory illnesses is affecting Brazil. Fiocruz, a leading health research institution, has reported a significant increase in cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) across 20 states. The primary culprits are influenza A and B viruses, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). 'The recent bulletin highlights the alarming increase in influenza cases,' stated a health official. In Cachoeiro, hospital visits for respiratory illnesses have jumped by 60% in March and April. Children under two and adults over 60 are particularly vulnerable. The low vaccination rate against influenza (30%) is a major concern, with the ideal coverage being 95%. 'Vaccination is crucial to contain the spread and severity of the disease,' explains Dr. Renato Quifúri of the Brazilian Society of Immunizations. The situation underscores the need for increased public awareness and vaccination efforts to protect vulnerable populations.
