Security Camera Thefts Plague São Paulo's Upscale Morumbi Neighborhood
Security cameras stolen in São Paulo's upscale Morumbi neighborhood. Residents of the Paraíso do Morumbi neighborhood in the South Zone of São Paulo are dealing with repeated vandalism—the theft of security camera totems. CoSecurity, a company supplying the equipment, filed police reports about thefts and damage to totems on Rua 17 de Janeiro, near Avenida Hebe Camargo, on May 11, 21, and 27. 'They're just playing around!' exclaimed one resident, witnessing the theft. The monitoring service, contracted by an apartment building, is linked to the city's Smart Sampa and the state's Muralha Paulista programs. The 89th Police District (Jardim Taboão) is investigating. The Municipal Secretariat of Urban Security (SMSU) stated that maintenance and replacement of damaged Smart Sampa equipment is the responsibility of the implementing consortium. The city is also installing an automatic alert system on publicly installed cameras to deter future vandalism. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of maintaining security in urban areas.
