Gunfire and Grenade Attack on PRF Team in Nova Iguaçu
A group of criminals attacked a Federal Highway Police (PRF) team on the Via Dutra highway in Austin, Nova Iguaçu, in the Baixada Fluminense region of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The attack occurred around 2 PM on Wednesday. According to witnesses, the criminals opened fire on the PRF officers and then abandoned a grenade on the Austin viaduct. Fortunately, the grenade did not detonate. "It was terrifying," said a local resident who witnessed the event. "We saw the shots and then the grenade. Everyone was running and screaming." One suspect, Luiz Eduardo Sampaio Bispo, 22, was apprehended, and a pistol was confiscated. The viaduct was closed for a time while the Civil Police's bomb squad and Military Police responded. After a technical analysis, the grenade was safely removed, and traffic resumed. Bispo was already wanted for drug trafficking. The Civil Police are now investigating the origin of the grenade. The swift response of the authorities and the fact that the grenade did not explode prevented a potentially much more serious incident.
