Brazilian Deputy Carla Zambelli Ordered Imprisoned, Extradition Sought
Brazilian Minister Alexandre de Moraes issued an order on June 7, 2025, mandating the immediate imprisonment of federal deputy Carla Zambelli. Zambelli, who had left Brazil for Italy at the end of May, was found guilty of computer system invasion and submitting false information. Her sentence includes 10 years imprisonment, loss of her political mandate, and a R$2 million fine. The decision also triggered an extradition process. "The decision of Moraes adopts the first measures for the beginning of the definitive fulfillment of Zambelli's sentences," stated the news report. This decision follows a previous ruling by the Supreme Court's First Panel rejecting Zambelli's appeal. The Minister also ordered the immediate communication of this decision to the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta, in accordance with Article 55 of the Constitution, which dictates the loss of a parliamentary mandate upon conviction. The event highlights the legal consequences of Zambelli's actions and underscores the ongoing political climate in Brazil.
