Galician Village's Resin Revival: Economic and Environmental Success Story
Galician Community Revives Resin Production, Leading Regional Efforts Porto do Son, Galicia – In the heart of Galicia, a community is leading a revival of resin production, breathing new life into a traditional industry and showcasing its economic and environmental benefits. The community of montes de Baroña, located in Porto do Son, has become a pioneer in the region, spearheading the resurgence of resin extraction. "We are in full production," says Ovidio Queiruga, president of the Comunidade de Montes de Baroña. "We use two methods: the open pot with incisions in the trees, and hermetic bags to obtain a purer product." The demand for resin is high, with applications in chemical, cosmetic, and food industries. "Anyone right now has something on their body made with natural resins," Queiruga points out. Beyond the economic advantages, Queiruga emphasizes the environmental and social benefits. "This well-maintained forest also means fire prevention, improved biodiversity, and more." However, he also notes a significant challenge: the lack of people willing to work in the forestry sector. Galicia has a large potential for resin production, but currently imports from countries like Brazil and China due to this labor shortage. Queiruga encourages more people to consider this opportunity, stating, "It's easy work, and we have enormous potential in Galicia." The success of Baroña serves as a model for other communities and highlights the potential for economic development while preserving the environment.
