As summer temperatures rise, gardeners often face the challenge of protecting their plants from extreme heat. Gardening expert Ish, known as "Gardening with Ish," recently shared crucial tips to help plants thrive even in the hottest conditions. According to Ish, proper watering is paramount. He advises watering plants in the early morning or late evening, when the sun is less intense, to ensure water seeps deeply into the soil rather than evaporating quickly. "If you do it in the middle of the day, chances are the sun's going to get it, it's going to evaporate, and you won't actually keep them watered," he explained. To further retain soil moisture, Ish recommends using mulching techniques. For potted plants, he suggests a light dusting of white gravel, which reflects sunlight and prevents excessive heat absorption, or good old-fashioned bark chippings. Another key piece of advice concerns lawn care. While it might be tempting to mow the lawn, Ish warns against it during a heatwave. "If you do it when it's too hot, you can stress it out, doing more harm than good," he stated, recommending waiting a few days and keeping the lawn well-watered. Finally, for sensitive plants like acers or other trees that require partial shade, Ish suggests placing them under a pergola or using inexpensive netting, similar to what might be used for a greenhouse. This provides essential protection from scorching sun rays, ensuring plants remain healthy and vibrant.
