London, UK – Gardening enthusiast Ish, known as "Gardening with Ish 🇬🇧" online, has shared a simple yet effective method for creating a DIY wasp trap using common household items. The technique, demonstrated in a recent video, aims to help individuals enjoy outdoor meals without the persistent presence of wasps, while also considering the safety of beneficial pollinators like bees. According to Ish, the trap can be constructed from a standard plastic bottle. The top section of the bottle is cut off and then inverted, creating a funnel that is placed back into the bottle's base. For the bait, Ish recommends a mixture of equal parts sugar, water, and apple cider vinegar. "The sugar water alone is enough to entice them in," Ish explains, "but the reason I like to add the apple cider vinegar is because on its own, it's not attractive to wasps, but mixed in with a bit of sweetness, and they go absolutely mad for it." He further noted that bees, however, are not attracted to the scent of apple cider vinegar, making this bait a safer alternative for non-target insects. Once assembled, the trap can be hung using a piece of gardening wire. Ish advises placing the trap at the edge of outdoor eating areas rather than directly beside food. "You don't want it too close because it's competing with the food smells," he cautioned, suggesting the traps draw wasps away from people and their meals. This practical gardening hack offers a quick solution for managing wasp populations in gardens and outdoor spaces.
