One Canadian gardener is warning against using landscaping fabric in your garden — here's what to do instead.
Gardening expert Grant, known as 'GardeningGrant' online, has issued a strong warning against the use of landscape fabric in gardens. In a recent video, Grant explained that despite being marketed as weed suppressors, most landscape fabrics are made of plastic and degrade over time, leading to microplastic contamination in soil and making weed removal more challenging in the long run. 'These products are rarely made of fabric; they're often plastic,' Grant stated. He emphasized that after a few years, weeds inevitably poke through, and gardeners are left dealing with both weeds and plastic fragments. As sustainable alternatives, Grant recommends using untreated cardboard beneath a layer of mulch or simply applying a thick layer of organic mulch like leaves. He also suggested direct weeding as a more effective and environmentally sound approach to garden maintenance.
