Surge in Violence at UK Prisons Sparks Urgent Action Call
A surge in violence in British prisons has prompted a call for urgent action from the Prison Officers Association. The most serious incident involved a prison officer at HMP Woodhill in Milton Keynes who suffered a throat slash from an improvised weapon. In a separate incident at the same prison, another officer was attacked. At Gartree prison, a female officer sustained a broken arm, and at HMP Hull, an officer was assaulted with a television. 'The escalating levels of violence are out of control,' said Steve Gillan, the general secretary of the Prison Officers Association. The Prison Service is conducting a snap review into the use of protective body armour. These incidents highlight the urgent need for improved safety measures and increased support for prison officers.
