Cover-up Allegations Rock Karen Read Trial

The trial of Karen Read, accused of killing her boyfriend John O'Keefe in a January 2022 blizzard, entered its seventh week. The defense is now presenting its theory, claiming O'Keefe's death was not caused by Read's SUV, but by others, and that investigators covered up the incident. A key witness for the defense, former Canton police officer Kelly Dever, gave testimony that contradicted her previous statements. The defense also called to the stand the lead investigator in the case, State Trooper Michael Proctor, whose friend Jonathan DiMede corroborated a group text in which Proctor made derogatory comments about Read. The defense forensic expert testified that O’Keefe’s injuries were consistent with a dog attack. Read’s attorney claims Dever was pressured to lie under oath. The trial is expected to last another week.
