Manila's Estero Cleanup: A Fight Against Flooding
Manila Esteros Cleaned to Prevent Flooding Manila, Philippines – In preparation for the upcoming rainy season, a major cleanup and improvement project is underway in Manila’s esteros (canals). The initiative, led by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), aims to prevent flooding and improve the overall conditions of these waterways. The video shows crews removing large amounts of metal and debris from the Estero de Magdalena in Binondo. One worker, interviewed on camera, explained the process: "The flood control is more on, you dig a six-meter base, then you build it up, and then you lay five-cup cement underneath." This highlights the scale and nature of the work involved. Beyond the physical work, the project has a significant impact on local residents. A vendor near the Estero de la Reina in Santa Cruz expressed relief, stating: "It’s really much better now, it’s cleaner, there’s no more trash." This demonstrates the positive effect on the community. The project extends beyond these two locations, with similar improvements planned for other esteros throughout Manila. The initiative demonstrates a proactive approach to flood management and community well-being.
