Mass Prison Break in Indonesia: 19 Inmates Escape, Guards Injured
Nineteen inmates escaped from Nabire Prison in Indonesia on an unknown date in May 2025. The escape was captured on CCTV footage, showing a coordinated effort by the inmates, one of whom was armed with a machete. Prison guards were seen hiding, and three sustained injuries during the incident. "We do not yet know for sure where the machetes came from. It is suspected that they were hidden under clothes during visiting hours." said Edi Saputra of Nabire Prison. The escape appears to have been well-planned, as a group of prisoners immediately attacked guards when a cell door was opened. Authorities have formed a task force to apprehend the escaped inmates. Three inmates linked to an armed criminal group were also involved in the escape. The incident raises serious questions about prison security protocols in Nabire.
