Făgăraș Mountains, Romania – Two tourists were successfully evacuated last night from the Făgăraș Mountains by a SalvaMont Argeș team after they became disoriented and panicked following an encounter with a bear. The incident occurred as the hikers were traversing the trail from Lake Călțun towards the Bâlea Tunnel refuge. According to a SalvaMont Argeș representative, the tourists observed a bear approaching them during their journey, which caused them to become scared and disoriented. In their panic, they strayed from the marked path and found themselves trapped in a dense area of pine bushes, unable to continue their descent. The rescue operation commenced around 10 PM. Rescuers faced challenging conditions due to the night-time darkness and the extremely dense and extensive pine bush terrain, which made movement difficult. The team, working alongside mountain gendarmes, located the two individuals. While the tourists did not sustain any medical injuries, their inability to navigate the dense vegetation necessitated the intervention of the rescue services. They were safely escorted down the blue triangle trail until they met with the mountain gendarmes, who then accompanied them to Piscu Negru. The successful operation highlights the dangers of mountain hiking, especially at night, and the importance of professional rescue services.
