Zagreb, Croatia - Popular Croatian musician Jole, whose real name is Joško Čagalj, has publicly voiced his strong support for the reintroduction of mandatory military service in Croatia. During an interview with Happy FM, Jole articulated his belief that military service offers invaluable benefits for young men, extending beyond national defense to personal development and character building. "It teaches you a code of conduct, upbringing, patriotism," Jole stated, emphasizing the practical skills gained. "You learn to live a little without mom and dad, to fold a shirt, pack a suitcase, clean something, even sew a button yourself." He drew on his own experiences, having served in both the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) and the Croatian Army. Jole recounted the rigorous routine, including early morning wake-ups and training in freezing temperatures, noting that "everyone came out here, and no one ever got sick or caught a cold." He concluded, "I call that manhood," suggesting that such an experience is crucial for instilling discipline and resilience in young men. His comments contribute to an ongoing public debate in Croatia regarding the potential return of compulsory military service.
