Michigan Mom Saves Drowning Child, Gets Cussed Out As Thanks, ‘They Think Our I…
A Michigan mom recalls her experience saving a drowning child, but their parent was furiously cussing with the other mother.
A certified lifeguard recently recounted a harrowing experience at a local beach where she intervened to save a young boy from drowning, only to be met with an unexpected and hostile reaction from the child's mother. The incident unfolded while the lifeguard, who has 17 years of experience and has directed multiple pools, was at the beach with her own children. She observed two young boys playing with a ball, gradually moving into deeper water. One of the boys, approximately six or seven years old, swam past the designated swimming area and began to drown, disappearing beneath the surface. Acting quickly, the lifeguard handed her one-year-old child to her husband and rushed into the water. She located the boy, who was actively drowning and spitting up water, and brought him to the surface. The boy was shaking and terrified. She reassured him and slowly helped him back to shore, as he was too shaky to walk on his own. Upon reaching the beach, the boy's mother, who had been engrossed in a book, looked up. Instead of gratitude, she began yelling and cursing at the rescuer, demanding to know why she was touching her son and threatening legal action. The rescuer attempted to explain that she had just saved her son from drowning. It was only when the rescued boy himself confirmed to his mother that the woman had saved him from drowning that the mother's demeanor shifted, and she offered a brief, "Oh, sorry." The lifeguard emphasized the extreme dangers of water, stating that "nothing about water is safe" and urging parents to remain vigilant. She highlighted that without her intervention, the child would likely have been a recovery operation for a search and rescue team.
