Vranov Castle: A Baroque Gem on the Czech-Austrian Border Vranov Castle, also known as Schloss Frain an der Thaya, stands majestically on a 75-meter high rock overlooking the Thayatal National Park in the Czech Republic. This impressive Baroque fortress, located just 90 minutes from Vienna, is a testament to architectural ambition and historical significance. Originally a medieval stronghold, Vranov Castle was transformed into a Baroque masterpiece by the Althann noble family in the 17th century. Unlike many grand European palaces built on open ground, Vranov's unique cliffside location presented a remarkable challenge that was masterfully overcome by architects like Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, a prominent figure in Austrian Baroque architecture. The castle's forecourt seamlessly blends Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque elements, leading to the stunning Baroque Trinity Chapel. Visitors can also admire two colossal statues by Fischer von Erlach, originally intended for Vienna's Hofburg, which found their home at Vranov by decree of Emperor Charles VI, who gifted them to Countess Maria Anna von Althann. Beyond its architectural marvels, Vranov Castle offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding national park and the meandering Thaya River. The area provides opportunities for hiking and exploring the natural beauty of the region. Despite its grandeur and historical connections to Austria, the castle remains a relatively undiscovered treasure, offering a unique cultural and natural experience for visitors.
